Breast implant surgery can be a highly gratifying experience. It is one of the most sought after cosmetic surgical procedures. The care you take of yourself after your operation is extremely important. It is essential that you have a responsible adult stay with you for at least 24 hours after surgery. At Clinica Castillo Cirugia, this operation is performed under local and intravenous sedation by an experienced anaesthetist. You will be comfortable throughout the procedure and cared for in the Recovery Room by our professional registered nurses. You will have a breast bandeau which keeps the implants from riding up. You must leave this garment on until I see you in your first post-operative visit, usually five to seven days after your operation. During this time period, you may sponge bathe and have someone to assist you to wash your hair.
It is important to limit your arm movements. When resting in bed, place your arms on soft pillows which will keep them elevated at the level of your chest. You will be given a prescription for pain medication which will alleviate any discomfort you may feel. Remember, everyone has a different pain threshold. Keep in mind that as each day passes, your pain will lessen. Some swelling and bruising is expected but if you notice marked swelling, especially on one side, please contact our office immediately. This may be a hematoma, which is bleeding into the tissues. Do not be alarmed as this is easily rectified by a quick return to the operating room to evacuate the bleeding but I must be informed. Please take your temperature frequently. If you notice a temperature, please let me know. Please make sure to rest and sleep a lost as this also hastens healing.
Drink lots of fluids after your surgery and make sure you eat lots of lean protein which aids in the healing process.
It is best to sleep alone for the first week so you do not get jostled and avoid picking up small children and pets. Do not go into direct sunlight. Do not smoke as smoking affects the microcirculation and impedes healing. Do not take alcohol while taking pain medication and do not drive under the influence of pain medication.
Your sutures will be removed when I see you in your first post-operative visit. You may then bathe and shower as you wish. Most activities can be resumed after a week except for strenuous exercise.
Scars are part of the body’s healing process. Scars left by breast enhancement surgery in Toronto are usually small and well-hidden in the crease beneath the breast (inframmary fold incision), around the nipple (periareolar incision) or in the armpit (transaxillary incision). Your scars will be firm and pink for several weeks and then they will begin to fade after several months. The scars should be very discreet. Protect scars from the sun during the healing process. Even through a bathing suit, a good deal of sunlight can reach the skin and cause damage. Wear a sunscreen with a skin protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 when in the sun and be extremely careful if areas of your breasts have reduced sensitivity.
And, finally, allow others to pamper you while you are recovering.
Please also remember I am available 24/7 should you have any questions or concerns.
